When replacing auto parts for proactive vehicle maintenance, it can be challenging to keep all of the schedules straight. However, you shouldn’t overlook your vehicle’s filters, which ensure systems run optimally. Here’s a quick guide to these filters, their functions, and how frequently they require replacement.

4 Types of Car Filters

1. Air Filter

When dirt, dust, sand, insects, and other debris are sucked into a car’s engine, it isn’t able to run at maximum power. The pleated cotton, foam, or synthetic paper air filter under the hood helps catch these particles, ensuring only clean air is involved in the fuel combustion process. When this filter becomes clogged, you may notice black exhaust smoke issuing from your tailpipe. To avoid this, have your air filter replaced every 15,000 to 30,000 miles or whenever the check engine light illuminates.

2. Cabin Filter

Cabin filters can be found in a variety of places depending on the vehicle make and model, so they can be challenging to reach. Replacement is best left to an auto parts expert every 15,000 to 25,000 miles.

3. Fuel Filter

A filter removes impurities naturally found in your fuel. When a fuel filter gets clogged, the engine has to work harder to perform, causing unnecessary wear and tear, poor acceleration, and stalling. Abrasive impurities also wear away fuel injectors and other auto parts, which will likely require premature replacement. To ensure your vehicle continues to run for years to come, replace the fuel filter on older vehicles at least every two years. For newer models, request your mechanic perform routine fuel pressure tests to note any issues as they arise.

4. Oil Filter

This filter keeps oxidized oil and metallic particles from collecting in your motor oil. When an oil filter fails, these particles can pass through your engine, causing long-term wear and even failure. Mechanics recommend replacing this filter every time you go in for an oil change—every three months for older cars and every six months for new models. Replacing both the oil and filter simultaneously ensures the fresh oil doesn’t get contaminated after coming in contact with an old filter.
