Cracks in the asphalt develop for a number of reasons, whether it’s from old age or exterior elements. Neglecting to repair them in a timely manner can detract from the property’s appearance and jeopardize the condition of the material. Follow this simple guide to determine what’s causing the cracks and how to prevent them from occurring.

What Are the Most Common Types of Asphalt Cracks?

1. Block

These cracks are rectangular in shape and normally develop in areas that don’t see a lot of traffic. As the asphalt reacts to changes in the temperature, it begins to shrink and causes openings to appear. Filling them in with crack seal will prevent further expansion. You might also consider replacing that section of old material to preserve the property’s appearance.

2. Alligator

asphaltThese cracks get their name from the fact that they look like alligator scales. They can spread across the entire width of the asphalt and are usually the result of a weak point in the base material. Spreading a thin layer of sealant could be enough to restore the driveway’s condition. If they continue to appear, however, you might have to completely redo the asphalt installation.

3. Linear

These cracks run in a straight line down the center of the asphalt. They come in varying lengths and are the cause of bad joints within the material. If they’re small, you can apply a sealant over the top for a simple repair. Larger cracks will require a full removal and overlay of new material to restore the stability of the surface.

4. Edge

These cracks are generally found along the edge of the asphalt and can be due to a lack of support. The material begins to crumble away and creates small openings within the material. Using a slurry seal to fill in the cracks and redirecting your drains should help improve the driveway’s condition.
