For appearing before your local judge, you want to make the best impression possible. Following basic courtroom etiquette guidelines makes it easier for your lawyer to handle the case because it demonstrates your commitment to the case overall. If you’re going to make a court appearance soon, keep these etiquette tips in mind to prepare.

5 Etiquette Tips for Appearing In Court

1. Dress “Business Casual”

Make your dedication to your case clear by dressing appropriately. Business casual attire such as pressed khakis or cotton pants, sweaters, pressed long-sleeved cotton shirts, skirts or dress slacks, blouses, and close-toed shoes are among the best choices. Avoid t-shirts, tank tops, mini skirts, shorts, hooded sweatshirts, and similar casual attire. Do not wear a hat or head covering to court unless it’s for religious purposes.

2. Be On Time

lawyerArrive at least 10 minutes early on your court date. Making a late appearance not only shows disregard for the court, but it can also mean that your case gets passed over and you will need to schedule another date. This creates problems for everyone involved, including your lawyer who has other clients to serve.

3. Turn Off All Devices

Mute or turn off your phone and any other devices on your person, such as a tablet or iPod. Any device that goes off during a hearing is highly disruptive and can cause the judge to find you in contempt of court. Do not bring food, drinks, or chewing gum into court for the same reason.

4. Speak Only When You’re Asked To

Address the judge or jury when you’re specifically asked to. Speaking out of turn is another disruptive measure that interferes with court recordings. Use proper English instead of slang, never argue, make eye contact with the judge and jury, and speak clearly and concisely.

5. Keep Your Emotions In Check

Avoid excessively displaying your emotions, no matter how you feel as the case proceeds. Showing too much emotion can hinder your case, and make you an unsympathetic figure. Stay calm — it will help you be taken seriously by the court.
