There is nothing like the thrill of riding a motorcycle. However, the same aspects that make it so enjoyable—the high speed, nimble maneuvering capabilities, and open air—also make riding incredibly dangerous. Fortunately, those who know the most common causes of motorcycle accidents can take steps to mitigate some of the risks.

3 Motorcycle Accidents to Avoid

1. Left-Turning Cars

motorcycle accidentsIntersections are inherently dangerous for motorcyclists. Because they are much smaller than standard passenger vehicles, motorcycles are less visible to drivers who are turning left. As a result, it’s not uncommon for left-turning cars to strike motorcycles that are proceeding straight through the intersection from the opposite direction. Make sure to be cautious when crossing an intersection, and reduce your speed so you can act quickly if a car is turning left.

2. Speeding

When riders speed, they’re more likely to lose control of their bike and strike a vehicle or fixed object. And when drivers speed, they’re less likely to react in time to prevent a collision when a motorcycle crosses their path unexpectedly. Because speeding is so dangerous, new riders are encouraged to purchase a bike with a fairly small engine so they’re not tempted to exceed their capabilities while on the road. Ensure that you always remain within speed limits to avoid getting a traffic ticket as well.

3. Poor Road Conditions

Road hazards such as sand, wet leaves, potholes, and slick paint may not pose much of a risk for passenger vehicles, but they can prove disastrous for riders. To avoid motorcycle accidents caused by poor road conditions, riders must constantly scan their surroundings so they can make evasive maneuvers as needed. If the weather poses a threat—heavy rain and thick fog—wait until it clears before hitting the road.
