If you are a quilter or like to sew, your sewing machine needs to be in working order all the time. With proper maintenance, a machine may work for years with no issues. But, if you notice problems, have them fixed promptly. The following are signs that you need sewing machine repairs.

What Are the Signs Your Sewing Machine Needs Repair?

1. Tension Problems

Most sewing machines have a tension control dial to adjust thread tension for the type of fabric you’re using. Snarling thread on the underside of the material is a classic sign that the tension is off. Change the settings according to your machine’s manual. Next, check to see that the thread and bobbin are threaded correctly. If this doesn’t solve the problem, you may need to have the tension control adjusted.

2. Inconsistent Feed

The feed dogs are the small, toothed mechanisms that help move the fabric under the presser foot and behind the machine as you sew. Over time, these teeth can wear down and do their job less effectively. Feed dogs can be replaced unless your machine is very old. Accumulated lint and fabric fluff may also interfere with fabric feed, so follow manufacturer instructions to clean around the bobbin case. Sewing machine repair shops usually offer a tuneup that cleans the inner mechanisms of the machine.

3. Broken Needles

The needle may be the wrong size for the type of fabric, or you may be using the incorrect presser foot for the stitch style. If after changing the needle or foot you still have broken or bent needles, there may be an issue with the feed dogs or another aspect of the mechanism that will require professional sewing machine repair.

4. Skipped Stitches

Erratic or skipped stitches may be a threading problem that’s easily addressed by rethreading the top thread. You may also be holding or pushing the fabric through the feed dogs too tightly. Persistent skipped stitches may indicate an issue with the timing.

5. Strange Noises

If you hear an unfamiliar noise as you’re sewing — stop. Grinding, clanking, or increased volume of the ‘normal’ sounds sewing machines make indicate that something is amiss inside the machine. Often, a thorough clean and tuneup will fix the problem — but if issues persist, have a professional look at it to address underlying repairs.
