When you notice a spot of liquid under your car that seems to be leaking from your vehicle, it’s only natural to be concerned. After all, some fluid leaks may be a sign of significant auto repairs, especially if the leak isn’t addressed in a timely manner. Here are a few guidelines to help you identify what type of leak you’re dealing with.

Leak Location

If you can look under the car and see where the leak is originating, you will have a much easier time identifying the source of the problem. For example, oil and antifreeze most commonly leak from the front of the car, close to the engine. Transmission fluid, on the other hand, tends to leak from the center.

Fluid Color & Smell

Engine oil is the most common type of leak and is easily distinguished by its slightly gassy smell and dark brown color. Motor oil leaks should be addressed immediately by an auto repair shop to keep your engine from overheating and suffering significant damage.

Antifreeze or coolant is typically either green or pink, depending on the variety being used. Don’t mistake pink coolant for automatic transmission fluid, which is typically a dark red. A brake fluid or power steering fluid leak could pose a severe safety risk. Both fluids have a yellowish color and a mechanical smell.

No matter what the culprit turns out to be, if the spot on the garage floor or driveway is large or if the leak seems to be frequent, it’s better to be safe by seeking out auto repairs.
