1. Attention to Detail

When performing an EKG, you will need to record data and carefully carry out every step of the test. You will need to spot if one of the sensors is out of place and monitor the movement of the EKG in real time. This will come with experience and training, but you should also take steps to maintain your focus. Prioritize doing it right over getting it done fast and always stay open to feedback from peers. You should also maintain an exercise regimen, as physical activity can make your brain better at ignoring distractions.

2. Communication Skills

As an EKG technician, you will need to communicate with physicians and other medical staff to ensure precise diagnoses. You will be required to concisely and accurately present the results of the EKG and answer any of the doctor’s questions. Even if you are operating in a hectic environment, you will be required to stay calm and be thorough as you speak. If you’re not sure you understand something, restate it in your own words, and always ask for clarification.

3. Interpersonal Skills

While you will need to master the technical skills necessary to perform EKGs, you will also be patient-facing. This means developing personal skills to keep the patient feeling comfortable. Remember to introduce yourself and calmly explain your role in the procedure. Always call the patient by their name to establish a rapport, and be mindful of and respectfully address any concerns about the test.
