During the warmer months of the year, your AC keeps your home and family cool and comfortable. However, as temperatures soar, there is a chance of it overworking itself, especially if it is an older unit or hasn’t had the proper maintenance. To prevent problems from getting worse, schedule air conditioner repair if you notice any of the following issues.

When Should You Call an HVAC Technician?

1. It's Blowing Warm Air

An air conditioner is intended to circulate cool air throughout the home. If it's blowing warm air instead, the cause could be a faulty compressor, low refrigerant levels, or a restriction in the proper flow of air. First, however, check the basics. The thermostat should be switched to "cool" and set at a temperature below the temperature in the room. If the problem is still evident, contact an air conditioner repair professional.

If you notice that the air pumped out by your AC is weak or inconsistent, it may indicate a clogged or broken air filter, a malfunctioning motor or fan, or blocked or leaking ductwork. Problems with airflow can also cause significant wear and tear on the unit. Left unaddressed for too long, a full replacement might be needed.

3. Leaks

A healthy AC utilizes refrigerant to produce cool air, and it can create condensation in the process. But neither refrigerant nor condensation should ever leak out of the unit. If you notice water collecting or standing around your air handler or furnace, the cause could be a clogged drain line, a broken drain pan or pump, or a clogged air filter. If you notice ice building up anywhere on the refrigerant line between your air handler and the AC it is likely either your system is low on refrigerant or there is a restriction of airflow. Check to ensure your furnace filter isn’t clogged. If that’s not the issue, you may need to turn your thermostat to fan only and call a service tech to check things over.
