Whether you want to get your new puppy ready for boarding or just want to teach an old dog new tricks, there are a few essential commands your pet should know. Teaching commands is an effective way to enforce obedience, and it’s also an important way to bond with your pup. If you’re ready to get started with training, use the core commands and techniques below.

3 Basic Commands Your Dog Should Know

1. Sit

Telling your dog to sit down is one of the easiest commands to teach. Start by holding a treat to your dog’s nose. Move it up until your dog sits so they can keep their eyes on it. Once sitting, say, “Sit.” Give the treat and shower them with affection. Continue doing this several times each day. You can eventually apply it to real-life situations, such as making them sit when new guests arrive or before you serve them food. It requires consistency, so make sure other family members follow the training method.

2. Stay

pet-hospitalYou don’t want your dog to bolt out the door or jump at guests. This is why “Stay” is a quintessential command. First, have your dog sit. Open your hand in front of them and say, “Stay.” Gradually move a few steps back, repeating “stay.” If they don’t move, toss them a treat. Continue moving backward, providing a treat each time they obey. This command can take time to learn, so be patient with your pet. Once your dog has mastered the command, you can use it in many different situations. If you’re boarding your dog, the employees at the boarding facility can also use it to make sure your pup stays well-behaved.

3. Come

Once your pup has mastered “sit” and “stay,” add this third command to the mix. First, tell your dog to sit and stay. Step backward and say, “Come.” If they come to you, provide a treat. Next, introduce their leash and collar. “Come” is especially helpful if their leash slips out of your hand during a walk. Kneel while facing them and slightly tug the leash forward. When they come, provide a treat. You can later remove the leash once they’ve begun to master this command.
