While the exact reasons why women in their childbearing years develop polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) are still unclear to doctors, it’s known that this condition is connected to hormonal imbalances. Levels of male hormones, such as androgens, are often at higher in women with PCOS, while progesterone levels are lower. Issues with insulin levels can also develop as a result. If you’re concerned about PCOS, learn about the symptoms of this hormonal disorder so that you’re prepared to discuss your issues further with a women’s health professional.

Symptoms of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome

Period Issues

Irregular period issues are the most common symptoms of polycystic ovary syndrome, but specific symptoms vary for each person. Women with PCOS may experience fewer than eight periods a year due to lowered ovulation. They may also go over 35 days between periods and experience heavy bleeding from excessive uterine lining accumulation. Hormonal complications from PCOS can also lead to difficulties with natural conception, while thickened uterine lining increases the risk of endometrial cancer.

Headaches, Weight Gain, & Sleep Troubles

Polycystic-Ovary-SyndromeOther hormonal changes linked to polycystic ovary syndrome can manifest as headaches and sleep problems, such as sleep apnea and difficulty falling asleep. If you experience sleep apnea, you will feel tired often, even if you get seven to eight hours of sleep most nights. Weight gain is another common symptom, as up to 80% of women with the disorder are overweight or obese. Weight gain also increases the risk of sleep apnea  up to 10 times.

Hair & Skin Problems

Elevated male hormone levels in the body can cause excessive hair growth (also called hirsutism) in unwanted areas, such as above the lip, chin, back, breasts, and stomach. Hair loss may also occur, as well as skin problems such as acne and oil overproduction. Skin darkening under the breasts, on the groin, and on the neck are also symptoms of this women’s health issue.
