Summer has a way of tempting us outside. However, as beautiful and welcome as the warm weather may be, it can also pose unique hazards to our pets. Therefore, veterinarians recommend taking certain precautions to protect your furry family members from the heat.

3 Pet Care Tips for Summer

1. Keep Them Cool & Hydrated

Your pets are going to drink a lot more water during the summer months, so provide additional bowls around the house. If you keep your pets outside during the day, keep a clean bowl of water in a sheltered area they have easy access to. Additionally, don’t make them walk on hot pavement—if it’s too hot for you to touch, it’s too hot for their paws to walk on—and never leave your pets in a vehicle by themselves under any circumstances.

2. Apply Flea & Tick Prevention

veterinarianIn Nebraska, fleas and ticks are a lot more active during the warmer months. Therefore, talk to your veterinarian about how to stop them from feeding on your beloved pet. Most treatments are applied monthly and can come as an oral medication, topical ointment, or a collar. Our top recommended products are Frontline Gold, Simparica and Seresto Collar; all of which you can find at out clinic.

3. Stay on Top of Grooming

Keeping your pets well groomed during the summertime will ensure they stay cool and comfortable—to keep their fur from matting or dragging through the summer mud by brushing them out at least 2 times a week. Please call out office several weeks in advance to get scheduled for a groom.  It is recommended to groom every 6,8,12 weeks depending on the dog breed.
