Although driving defensively and practicing caution behind the wheel decreases your chances of getting involved in a car accident, you can’t rule out the possibility completely. To ensure you’re equipped to handle the aftermath should the situation arise, you need to know what to expect. From contacting emergency personnel to working with your insurance agency, here are a few steps to keep in mind.

What to Do If You're in a Car Accident

1. Move to Safety

If you’re blocking the road and the car is still mobile, move the vehicle to a safer location. If possible, move off the street entirely, into a nearby parking lot or onto a side street with little traffic. If you can’t do that, move onto the shoulder and engage your hazard lights. Do not leave the scene entirely, however, as that’s considered a crime in most states.

2. Check for Injuries

Check yourself and your passengers for injuries. If you are all okay and can exit the vehicle safely, check any other involved vehicles for injured passengers.

3. Call 911

Dial 911 to report the incident. Tell the dispatcher where you are, what happened, and whether you need emergency medical services. Return to your vehicle and wait for authorities to arrive. The police officer will then take statements and tell you how to acquire a police report.

4. Gather Information

5. Contact Your Insurance Agency

Call your agent when you get home or the following day to report the incident. You’ll need to provide the contact and insurance information for other drivers and witnesses, the photos you collected at the scene, and the police report. Your agent will walk you through the claims process, and, depending on who was at fault, let you know what damages you can collect or what you must pay out.
