If you have children, there’s nothing surprising about fingerprints, crayon marks, and candy smears appearing on your walls. However, if you’ve just had interior painting work done, these small messes will seem like a much bigger deal. Use the tips below to keep your new coat of paint clean and clear, so you can protect the investment.

3 Common Messes on Painted Walls

1. Handprints

Almost all the stains on your wall will fall into two categories: oil-based and water-based. While water-based stains like wine can be removed with a wet rag, oily stains will require a cleaning solution. Mix one ounce of a mild dishwashing detergent with a gallon of warm water, and gently scrub the oily finger or handprint away. When you’re finished, dry the area thoroughly to protect the paint.

2. Scuff Marks

interior-paintingThese dark marks are usually caused by shoes, bags, or furniture, so you’ll likely see them waist height or lower. In some cases, you may be able to remove scuff marks with a clean eraser. If this doesn’t work, wet and wring out a sponge, sprinkle baking soda on it, and scrub the scuff mark away. If the mark was caused by shoe polish or a similar substance, your best bet is to purchase a dry cleaning solvent and wipe it over the spot with a soft cloth.

3. Permanent Marker

Permanent marker is one of the hardest types of stains to remove, since its chemical makeup is similar to that of the paint on your walls. It’s better to start off small with a gentle dishwashing solution before using the rough side of the sponge and a stronger all-purpose cleaner. In some cases, you may want to try stain removing products like Mr. Clean®’s Magic Eraser. Since your last resort will be to cover up the stain with primer and more paint, don’t scrub too hard — you’ll have to cover up the roughed-up area anyway.
