People reach their peak bone mass in their 20s, after which they begin losing it faster than they build it. This can leave older adults susceptible to broken bones if they experience a fall or other accident in their senior living community. Fortunately, there are ways to help your loved one to strengthen their bones and boost their overall health.

How to Stave Off Osteoporosis

1. Exercise

Thirty minutes of exercise every day can strengthen bones and help prevent osteoporosis. Speak with your loved one’s doctor before starting an exercise regimen. They should participate in weight-bearing exercise such as yoga or walking through the grounds of their senior living community. Strength training is ideal; studies have found this exercise reduces risk factors for osteoporosis and boosts bone density.

2. Take Supplements

Seniors should consume plenty of dairy for calcium. You can add in some vitamin D supplements as well. Avoid salty foods and caffeinated beverages, since these can reduce the body’s ability to absorb calcium.

3. Get Outdoors

Natural sunlight helps the body absorb vitamin D from food and supplements. Recommend your senior loved one walk for ten minutes, two or three times per week, without wearing sunscreen. Protect them from the sun otherwise with sunscreen and hats, since too much exposure can be harmful.
