If you are keeping heating oil in your tank over the spring and summer, you may be wondering whether you can use it when winter rolls around, There is no simple answer, as the life span of the oil depends on a variety of conditions and factors. Here’s what you need to know so you can determine whether you should drain or replace your heating oil during the summer months.

What Happens to the Oil in Storage?

The bacteria inside the tank will slowly break down the heating oil. Further, if water gets into the tank, it will speed up the process, decreasing the substance’s life span. Other materials that can form in the tank, such as rust or sludge, can also hurt the oil quality, making it inefficient or even dangerous to use. Once the oil turns into a thicker sludge, it cannot be burned for fuel and should be disposed of properly. If it has gone bad, you will be able to smell an unpleasant odor when you open the tank’s cap.

What Affects the Life Span?

heating oilGenerally, heating oil lasts between 18 and 24 months. However, the condition of the tank can affect the life span. If it has never held any substances other than heating oil and doesn’t have any debris or rust buildups, your oil will be left uncontaminated. If you know that you will not be using your oil during the upcoming season or you simply want to protect your supply during the off-season, keep it in good condition by using some additives. Ask your fuel delivery team to add octane-boosting products when they deliver your oil. Avoid putting in the additive yourself, as it will only work when it’s added before being stored.
