An outdated septic system can lead to a host of unpleasant problems, from sewage backups in the yard to sick family members. While systems can last for many decades, it’s important to know when it’s time to replace yours. Here are a few early warning signs that you should install a new septic tank.

When Should You Upgrade Your Septic System?

1. Slow or Gurgling Drains

One slow drain usually indicates a clog, but if all of them are having the same issue, it’s a sign of trouble. You may be overdue for pumping services, as the sludge could be slowing the drainage. If you empty the tank and the problem resumes, the system may be failing. You may also hear gurgling sounds coming from the plumbing; this indicates that water and air aren’t moving through the pipes properly.

2. Limited Capacity

You may also need to replace the system if your water usage suddenly increases. For example, you may choose to plant a large garden with drainage to the septic tank, install a garbage disposal, or run a day care service out of your home.

3. Standing Water by the Tank

Standing water near the tank could be due to leaks or a failing drain field. The latter is where the septic tank sends the effluent, or wastewater, for filtration via the soil. It is full of intricate plumbing, and a problem with the drain field—such as a leak—can lead to expensive repairs. If the latter is the issue, those with older systems will often replace the tank and drain field. A contractor will need to inspect the system to determine which part of it is causing the problem.
