The ocean is teeming with life and is home to beautiful plants and animals. If you’re fortunate enough to experience snorkeling off the island of Oahu, you’re bound to get an up-close view of some remarkable sea creatures in their natural habitats.

3 Sea Creatures to Look for While Snorkeling in Hawaiian Waters

1. Triggerfish

The reef triggerfish, or humu humu nuku nuku apua’a, is the official state fish of Hawaii. It’s sometimes called the humu humu for short and can be found in over 40 varieties. You can identify these tropical fish by spotting their angular face and spiny tail. They can grow up to 10 inches in length, making them one of the larger and more noticeable reef fish.

2. Sea Turtles

snorkelingThere are five sea turtle species indigenous to Hawaii, and the most common is the green sea turtle. Known as honu in Hawaiian, these reptiles were once on the threatened species list; however, protective laws have helped increase their numbers. If you spot one while snorkeling, admire it from afar as they’re still part of the Endangered Species Act and illegal to touch.

3. Invertebrates

From crustaceans to octopuses, there are many spineless creatures you can observe while swimming among the reefs. For example, there are three species of spiny lobster in Hawaii, and they have smaller claws than the Maine lobster. Keep your eyes peeled for shrimp, snails, sea urchins, and sponges, as well. These creatures are small, and you might have to look for them in the cracks and crevices of coral.
