As a parent, one of the milestones you can expect to see as your child grows of the loss of their first baby tooth. The primary teeth make sure that incoming adult teeth have enough room when they finally erupt, while also providing kids an early introduction on the importance of dental care. Here’s what you should know about baby teeth, as well as the proper dental care plan to help your child prepare for their adult teeth.

When Do Most Kids Begin Losing Teeth?

Most children lose their first tooth by age 6. The central incisors are often the first to go, followed by the lateral incisors, which are usually lost by age 8. Between the ages of 9 and 12, kids will gradually lose their molars and cuspids until all adult teeth finally come in. The remaining permanent teeth, or wisdom teeth, usually erupt between the ages of 17 and 21.

Eating is difficult when a child is losing baby teeth. During this period, try to accommodate your child by offering small bites of food. For example, instead of a whole apple, give your child bite-sized pieces to prevent chewing difficulties.

How Can They Care for Their Adult Teeth?

dental careOnce your child’s adult teeth have erupted, brushing and flossing are imperative. Children should brush twice a day for at least two minutes at a time. They should also use a fluoride toothpaste, which boosts the strength of enamel and reduces cavities. Daily flossing removes plaque and bacteria from between the teeth.

Diet is another important consideration. Limit your child’s consumption of sugary treats and drinks to prevent tooth decay. Make sure your child is drinking enough water, especially when playing sports, to prevent dry mouth. While sports drinks are touted as a healthy alternative to soda, keep in mind that their high acid content can also damage the enamel.
