For homeowners who’ve grappled with outdated and inconsistent heating and cooling systems, an upgrade is something exciting to look forward to. Before the HVAC contractor arrives for the installation, there are several do’s and don’ts to consider. Ensure you’re prepared by keeping the following steps in mind.

Do:

Clear away the area to be used.

Remove furniture, wall accessories and other items so the HVAC contractor has plenty of room to install your new unit. If it’s an outdoor system, clear away branches, leaves, and other debris so the area is safe and ready for installation service.

Keep kids and pets away.

Air conditioning units are heavy and have moving parts before an installation is complete. To ensure their safety, keep pets and children occupied in other parts of the house. Better yet, arrange for an older sibling or friend to take them to the park or another fun place while the HVAC contractor is on site.

Select the right size unit.

HVAC contractorBefore the installation date, discuss what size HVAC unit you’ll need with your technician. A unit that’s too small won’t cool your home efficiently and could run the risk of overheating, while a unit that’s too big will waste energy.  An experienced technician will offer recommendations based on your needs, considering elements such as your house’s square footage, ceiling height, and thickness of your insulation.

Don’t:

Forget to clean air ducts.

Existing ductwork will need to be cleaned before your new heating and cooling system is installed. Doing so will prevent old dust from circulating throughout your home. Dirty ductwork can also make your new unit work harder than needed, which can lead to repairs and premature wear and tear.

Neglect future maintenance services.

After your unit is installed, follow a regular maintenance schedule to help keep it in top condition. Your HVAC contractor will suggest how often to schedule periodic servicing, which typically occurs once a year. They’ll also recommend how often to change your air filters — about every 90 days for most households, or 60 days for pet owners.
