If you're missing multiple teeth, your dentist may recommend dentures so you can smile, eat, and speak naturally. But to make this dental appliance last and avoid discomfort, you need to practice proper hygiene. Here are a few tips to keep in mind.

What Your Family Dentist Wants You to Know About Denture Care

1. Rinse After Eating

Every time you eat, take a few minutes afterward to rinse off your dentures with water and remove food debris. This means less food for the bacteria in your mouth, so they won't multiply so quickly. Removing bacteria will also keep your gums clean and healthy.

2. Brush Correctly

Your dentures can't get cavities, but they still need brushing to remove plaque. Use a denture-safe toothpaste, not one meant for teeth. In particular, any abrasive toothpaste — such as those with baking soda— will damage your dentures.

3. Clean Your Mouth

DentistWhile you have your dentures out, don't forget to brush your gums, tongue, and the roof of your mouth. Bacteria collect in these spots, as well as on the artificial teeth, and putting clean dentures back into a dirty mouth will only transfer the germs.

4. Soak Overnight

Each night, take your dentures out and immerse them in a denture solution. This will help clean them more thoroughly. In the morning, rinse off the denture solution with water before you put them back in your mouth.

5. Get Adjustments

Every year, make an appointment with your dentist to check the fit and condition of your dentures. Your mouth and jaw change over time and general wear can change the shape of your dentures, so they may need to be adjusted or re-lined to improve comfort and wearability.
