The best way to protect your child's oral hygiene and health is to help them establish an early habit of brushing thoroughly. But to ensure teeth cleaning doesn’t turn into a battle, you need to make brushing and flossing fun. Follow these dentist-approved tips to get your kids excited about the routine.

How to Help Your Kids Enjoy Brushing

1. Do It Together

The No. 1 way to ensure your child will love teeth cleaning is to turn it into family time. You’ll set an example of how to brush your teeth correctly, and the whole family will benefit from spending quality time together.

2. Choose Fun Products

Teeth CleaningIt may seem gimmicky, but that sparkly toothpaste or the toothbrush with a TV character or cartoon on it can get your child excited about brushing their teeth. Take your kids to the store and let them pick out an exciting new product they’ll be eager to use.

3. Add a Song or Game

While your child is brushing, consider putting on a song they love. Try to find a tune that’s about two minutes long — the recommended time for brushing —  and tell your child they have to brush until the song ends. Get a little silly by pretending you don't know how to use a toothbrush, and get your child to help you. Or, let them brush the teeth of their favorite doll or stuffed animal before moving onto their own mouth.

4. Establish a Routine

Kids are less likely to resist teeth cleaning if they know when to expect it. Set up a morning routine and a bedtime routine that stays consistent each day. Brush and floss at the same time and in the same order so it becomes a habit that sticks.

5. Give Out Stickers

Everyone enjoys being recognized for a job well done, including your kids. Stickers and other small treats can be an easy, enjoyable motivator. You can give them the sticker directly after they do a good job brushing, or put it on a chart to show their progress. If they have a month of perfect brushing, you can offer a larger reward, like a new toy or game.
