If you experience mobility issues or need pain relief, your physical therapy may include dynamic stretching. This type of flexibility exercise includes active movements that improve muscle length in a controlled manner.  It can include some types of yoga, tai chi, and Pilates along with some simple individual stretches. Moving your body this way provides a range of benefits. Here’s a closer look.

The Definition of Dynamic Stretching

There are two main types of stretches used to lengthen your muscles. Static stretching means getting into a position and holding it for 30 seconds.  This is used to relax muscles after a workout or similar activity. Dynamic stretching is moving through a comfortable range of motion repeatedly to slowly lengthen muscles, improve blood flow, and ready them for the task you are going to perform, such as sports, yard work, etc. Some examples of individual stretches are walking lunges and torso twists.

How Dynamic Stretching Helps Your Physical Therapy

physical therapyWhen you attend a physical therapy appointment, your therapist may guide you through some dynamic stretches and may also assign you to do them at home. There are several reasons for this. First, warming up with stretches before physical activity is key to protecting yourself from sprains and tears. Warm muscles are more pliant and more difficult to injure than cool ones.

Secondly, dynamic stretching gradually increases your flexibility, which is important if you're recovering from an injury or illness that limits your mobility. Through diligent stretching, you can recover some or all of your range of motion. Dynamic stretching routines are also relaxing and can help you with stress management, using up nervous energy and releasing tension from your muscles. Last but not least, dynamic stretching promotes circulation, which is needed to speed recovery.
