Braces and Invisalign® are both effective teeth straightening methods, each with its own benefits. The ideal choice for you will depend on your priorities and the issues you wish to correct. Here’s what you should know about the basics of both options so you can talk with your orthodontist about which is right for you.

Metal Braces

What to Expect

Braces are metal brackets glued semi-permanently onto each tooth. The brackets are then connected by a wire held into place by tiny rubber bands. The brackets are adjusted when you go into the office to move your teeth. How long you wear them for will depend on the issues you’re trying to fix and how far you need to move your teeth; the teeth can only be moved so quickly without damage. However, most patients wear them for around two years. They will require extra care in brushing and flossing to avoid the accumulation of food or plaque around the brackets.

Who It’s Best For

Braces are best for younger people who might have difficulty remembering to wear trays all day. Because it can make more dramatic changes than Invisalign, it is also recommended for people who need to move teeth a greater distance, have back tooth bite problems, or have bridgework.

Invisalign

What to Expect

invisalignInvisalign uses transparent plastic trays that are molded to your teeth. You will wear a series of these trays, each slightly different, to move your teeth. These trays can be removed and put back in as you wish. While this allows you to eat without getting food stuck in them, it does require more self-control, since you must wear them at least 22 hours a day for results. Treatment plans typically last between 6 and 18 months.

Who It’s Best For

Invisalign is a fantastic choice for people who want to discreetly make changes to their teeth. It is popular among adults who don’t want to wear metal braces. It’s also recommended for athletes or those who are worried about comfort, since the smooth plastic won’t irritate the mouth in the way metal might. The trays can effectively straighten teeth as long as no molars or canines need to be rotated.
