While a lack of quality sleep can be traced to any number of issues, start by seeing how situations at home might be contributing. For example, many people can be temperature-sensitive during the night, which can affect their rest. The guide below offers tips for how to adjust your HVAC to make you more comfortable.

How to Fix Your HVAC for Optimal Sleep

1. Change Filters

Filters in your HVAC are designed to catch allergens and other particles before they enter your home. When filters are dirty and clogged, they will not be able to purge contaminants from the air, which reduces indoor air quality. Change or clean your filters every couple of months and you’ll soon find yourself breathing better, especially at night.

2. Stay Cool

Our bodies tend to cool down as we fall into sleep. As such, science posits that by cooling the room to 60 to 72 degrees Fahrenheit, it will prompt you to descend into that state more quickly.

3. Add Zones

HVACThat being said, exceptions may need to be made for the elderly or babies, who likely need the room a little warmer. Personal preference also should be factored in. Consider zoning your home—a process that means you can control the temperature for the space you’re in without affecting other areas, so everyone can pick what they are most comfortable with.

4. Control Humidity

Dry air can lead to dry skin and sinus issues. Meanwhile, too much moisture can make the room feel warmer than it is. Ask your HVAC contractor to install a humidifier or dehumidifier to keep humidity levels between 40% and 45%.

5. Incorporate Fans

Using a ceiling fan together with your air conditioning will keep air circulating all night long. The breeze it produces will also help maintain ideal sleeping temperatures for a more restful night.
