Though HVAC maintenance generally should be left to the professionals, there are a few tasks you can take care of on your own. If you wish to improve your indoor air quality, keeping HVAC vent covers clean should be near the top of your list. By removing dust buildup, you can eliminate allergens, improve the efficiency of your heating and cooling system, and keep your home looking clean.

Top 3 Tips For Cleaning HVAC Vent Covers

1. Change Air Filters Regularly

When dust buildup occurs around the vent covers, there’s a good chance that your HVAC filters are no longer doing their job right. An old filter will let more dust and allergens circulate throughout the ducts. Changing these filters every other month will help prevent dust buildup and help your system run more efficiently.

2. Vacuum Inside the Lower Ducts

HVACLower-level ducts can be cleaned with a dust brush attachment on your vacuum. This will quickly remove dust that has accumulated on the outside of the grille. When possible, use a screwdriver to detach the air duct cover and vacuum inside the grates as well. If you need to remove caked-on grime from the grille, use soap and water. Turn off your air conditioning before you start this process.

3. Wipe Ceiling Vent Grilles

You may not be able to reach ceiling vents with your vacuum, but you can still eliminate dust bunnies by wiping the vent clean with a broom. Keep your mouth and nose covered, and use a sheet to cover furniture or flooring below the vent to keep it from getting dirty from falling dust.
