Homeowners replace their windows for several reasons, ranging from aesthetic value to energy efficiency. Although it’s easy to discard the previous windows after they’re replaced, there may be a better way to handle those pieces. Here are a few ways to reuse old windows instead of throwing them away.

How to Upcycle Your Old Windows

1. Donate the Material

windowsThere’s always value in donating your unwanted materials to a worthwhile charity instead of sending them straight to the nearest landfill. Windows are typically accepted at local Habitat for Humanity® ReStores, for example, and then they are used in the construction of new properties or to rehabilitate those in a state of disrepair. You can also ask your installer about other donation options in your area. Some may also accept pieces of broken glass.

2. Design Home Decor

With a little creativity, you can transform an old window into something eye-catching and elegant for your home. Paint the frame and lean it against the wall to add an unusual, rustic piece of artwork to a room. You could even swap the glass for a mirror and hang that on your bedroom wall. If you need a coat rack in your entryway, this is a great opportunity to design one inexpensively. Simply attach sturdy hooks to each side and suspend the window on the wall.

3. Create a Frame

You can even use those old windows to design a few custom picture frames. If they are double-pane models, simply slide photographs between the glass to create a series of interesting collages. You could also use them to show off large posters or enlarge beloved photographs and hang them on the wall.
