The fact that you’ve never tried your hand at outdoor cooking on a gas grill before shouldn’t stop you from starting now. Anyone can become a backyard chef with the right knowledge and a little practice. Get started with the tips below, and you’ll be throwing successful barbecues before you know it.

Beginner’s Tips for Using a Gas Grill

1. Preheat

Propane gas is efficient in quickly heating up your grill and maintaining the desired temperature, but you can’t just throw your food on and turn the knob. Set your desired temperature, get the propane tank flowing, and give the grill 10 to 15 minutes before you begin cooking.

2. Clean It

gasA clean grill will create better grill marks, last longer, cook more evenly, and result in better-tasting food. Clean the grill grates off with a brush after preheating and before each use, but leave the grease there after you’ve finished cooking. If there are stubborn bits of food, you can dip the brush in water before using it. Conduct a more thorough cleaning of your burner tubs and other grill components under the grates twice a year.

3. Use the Zones

A gas grill has zones of direct and indirect heat, so you can use those for the desired result. Use direct heat for searing or quick-cooking vegetables; you can set this up by turning one or two burners to high or medium-high. Use indirect heat (convection) for baking meat to the correct internal temperature—turn on one or two burners next to the direct heat source.
