The tires of your car are the sole connection between your vehicle and the surface of the road, so keeping them maintained is crucial for your safety. Part of that responsibility involves making sure the tires have enough tread to properly grip the road. Here are a few reasons why this task is so important.

Why Is Adequate Tire Tread Important?

1. Complies With the Law

Many states have laws governing minimum tread depth and tire condition. For instance, in North Carolina, your vehicle will not pass its yearly safety inspection if the tires are past their useful lifespan. The tread depth must be at least 2/32" (when new, the depth is about 10/32” on most tires) and the rubber must not contain any cuts or snags that expose the cords beneath. Tires may also not have any visible bulges or knots.

2. Prevents Hydroplaning

tiresThe tire tread is comprised of rubber blocks that protrude outward. These are separated by grooves that encircle the tires and voids that run perpendicular to the grooves. The voids and grooves allow water on the road to escape. This prevents hydroplaning, a phenomenon that occurs when tires are separated from the road by a thin film of water, enabling the car to slide out of control.

3. Affects Stopping Distance

Proper tread depth minimizes the required stopping distance in an emergency braking situation. The voids and grooves allow space for the blocks to flex, improving the tire's grip on the road. This improves braking ability and shortens the amount of distance needed to come to a halt. Without enough tread depth, the blocks cannot flex properly, resulting in a loss of friction and reduced braking capability.
