Hearing aids improve life for individuals who have difficulty hearing. However, these devices are only effective when they are maintained, so it’s important to properly care for them. Here’s what you need to know to get started.

3 Ways to Care for Your Hearing Aids

1. Clean Them Frequently

Maintaining a cleaning schedule for your hearing aids is vital to their longevity. It’s common for earwax to collect at the end of the device, which can lead to a muffled or whistling sound. Use a wax pick to loosen the debris, then use a brush to remove it. Take the time to clean them every day—ideally in the evening—and air them out before you put them back on. Also, have a professional deep clean them at least twice a year.

2. Keep Them Dry

If they do get wet, dry them right away with a towel to avoid damage. Also, keep them dry during the cleaning process and when replacing the batteries. Finally, always store them in a dry space when you’re not wearing them.

3. Replace the Wax Filters

Wax filters are integral to the life span of the device. They’re designed to stop wax from infiltrating the electrical components and causing harmful damage. Replace the filters when you notice wax building up; don’t wait for it to collect and prevent them from working.
