When you think of colored substances that require you to get a teeth whitening treatment, beverages, like coffee and red wine, might come to mind. However, some of your favorite solid foods could also be discoloring your smile.

Foods That Will Discolor Your Teeth

1. Blueberries

The dark pigment of blueberries will attach to your teeth and discolor them. Blueberries are healthy foods, so you should continue to consume them, but rinse away the pigments after you eat to prevent them from settling on the tooth’s surface.

2. Tomato Sauce

The acidity of tomato products can erode enamel, making teeth more porous and susceptible to stains. To keep tomatoes from staining your smile, eat them with green vegetables, such as broccoli and lettuce, because they create a protective film on your teeth.

3. Soy Sauce

This condiment is highly concentrated with acid, so use it sparingly and brush your teeth after consuming it. Wait at least 30 minutes before grabbing your toothbrush as the bristles can push the acids into the tooth’s surface.

4. Popsicles®

Many Popsicles® contain artificial coloring that can discolor your lips, tongue, and teeth. Even if you opt for frozen treats made from natural fruit juices, dark-colored flavors, like grape, cranberry, and pomegranate, can leave stains on your teeth. To keep enjoying Popsicles® while protecting your pearly whites, try ones made from lighter juices, such as apple and white grape.
