Summer is almost here. The season of sunshine, shorts, and some well-deserved R&R. However, if you are planning a trip that involves bringing your furry family member along, it adds an extra level of complexity to the preparations. While you should consult a veterinarian for advice, use the following guidelines for getting started.

How to Travel With Pets

1. Make Sure They’re Secure

Even if your pet is well-behaved, letting them roam freely in the car can put them in serious danger if you get into an accident. If your pet has a panic attack or gets scared, it can be distracting both physically and mentally. Therefore, ask a veterinarian for harness recommendations. Additionally, if you want to let in a breeze, only crack the window a little bit, rather than let your dog stick their head fully outside the car.

2. Don’t Leave Them in the Car

Extremes of both hot and cold are dangerous for dogs and cats, and large storms can cause panic and fear. As such, many states have made it illegal to leave pets unattended. Furthermore, if something happens to your car while you are gone, they will be vulnerable. Therefore, reconsider taking any “quick stops” without them.

veterinarian3. Always Have Food & Water on Hand

Having water always available makes sure that no matter how hard they pant, your pet will stay hydrated. If you are going on a long trip, try to stick to their regular feeding schedule as much as possible.

4. Don’t Forget Their Medications

Before extended travel, check in with a veterinarian to make sure all your pet’s medications are up-to-date and filled. If you have an older pet, one that has experienced trauma, or one that is prone to anxiety, ask about possible sedatives.
