One in 10 people over the age of 65 has Alzheimer's disease. And even for those that don’t, it can be a persistent concern. However, in spite of the genetic component of this disease, certain senior living practices can reduce your risk, as described below.

Do:

Exercise.

Exercise has been shown to decrease the risk of developing Alzheimer's by as much as 50%. It is thought to stimulate activity in the brain, helping retain neural pathways as well as forge new ones. Make exercise part of your day-to-day senior living by doing at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity at least five days a week; walking and swimming are low-impact ways of improving one’s health.

Socialize.

senior livingBy having an active social life, the brain becomes busy navigating interpersonal relationships. Furthermore, some of the social activities that people like to do—such as playing cards or going bowling—that involve skill and strategy can improve focus and concentration. Social events also aid in creating a more solid sense of time and place, which can help a senior feel more connected to their physical environment and more aware of time and dates.

Don't:

Eat too many desserts.

Sugar-laden foods cause inflammation in the brain. Unhealthy fats do the same, as well as encourage the production of free radicals, toxic metabolic byproducts that wreak havoc on the brain. Choose healthier options whenever and wherever possible, including fresh fruits and foods containing healthy fats, like avocados, olive oil, and salmon.

Neglect sleep.

Sleep is central to brain health. It provides valuable time to rest, recharge, and rejuvenate. Seven or eight hours a night is the usual general benchmark for quality sleep. If you are a senior living with insomnia, untreated sleep apnea, or another health issue that leaves you perpetually tired, consult a doctor as soon as possible.
