Your vehicle depends on its transmission to run smoothly. Transmission fluid protects the integrity of this vital part by reducing overheating, protecting metal components from excess wear and tear, and safeguarding the gaskets. You’ll need to change the fluid periodically to maintain your vehicle and avoid transmission repairs. Here’s how to check your car’s fluid levels.

How to Check Transmission Fluid

1. Park Your Car

Park your vehicle on even ground with the hand brake engaged. Whether you should turn the engine on or off to check the fluid will depend on the vehicle; check your owner’s manual before you proceed.

2. Remove the Dipstick

Open the hood and locate the dipstick, which is usually situated at the front of the engine. If your car has rear-wheel drive, then you may find the dipstick at the back. It’s not unusual to confuse this dipstick with the one for engine oil, so if you’re not completely sure, have a technician handle this task. Keep in mind that some of the newer vehicles may not have an accessible transmission dipstick, so you will need to bring your vehicle in for a technician to check the fluid.

3. Assess the Fluid

Waipio Gentry, HI transmission repairPull the dipstick up, wipe it down until it’s clean, reinsert it for five seconds, then remove it once more. Assess the markings visible on the dipstick. If the fluid doesn’t touch the “full” line, then you need to add more through a funnel. Do this slowly since you only need to add enough to reach the “full” line.

4. Check Its Condition

Besides the fluid’s level, you also need to consider how it looks. Different colors can tell you whether you need to visit a transmission repair technician. Fresh fluid is dark red. If it appears rusty or black, bring the vehicle to your nearest transmission maintenance expert to assess whether the part requires servicing or replacement. Take a peek under your car as well. If you spot red, oily fluid with a petroleum-like odor, then you likely have a leak.
