Your cosmetic products all come with expiration dates. Using items beyond their recommended period of use isn’t just a fashion issue; it’s a major eye care faux pas that can even lead to serious vision problems. Now that spring is here, it’s the perfect time to go through your makeup bag and replace expired items with fresher versions.

Spring Cleaning Advice for Makeup

Mascara

Because mascara is applied so close to the eye, you’re at risk for serious skin and vision issues if it’s contaminated. Conjunctivitis, which can be caused by a bacteria or virus, causes inflammation, itchiness, and discharge. Between replacements, prevent bacteria from clinging to the mascara wand by keeping the container tightly closed when it isn’t in use.

Eyeshadow

visionMost powdered eyeshadows are good for about two years, although cream shadows should be replaced every year. Keep in mind that bacteria can accumulate on eyeshadow and transfer to your eyes each time you use it. This can lead to eye infections, which will impair your vision over time. Make sure to discard brushes when the bristles appear worn or damaged.

Eyeliner

Pencil eyeliners usually need to be replaced once every two years. This is because pencil liners can be sharpened, removing possibly contaminated material and preventing it from being transferred to your eye. Conversely, liquid liners should be replaced every three months to avoid potential skin and vision issues. Much like mascara, liquid eyeliner is applied close to the eye and can’t be cleaned to prevent bacteria from collecting.
