95% of Americans own a cellphone. With increased cellphone ownership and usage comes increased chances of developing "tech neck." This condition is caused by looking downward at a cellphone for extended periods, placing pressure on the musculoskeletal system and producing significant neck pain. Below are some important things to know about tech neck.

The Cause

When you look down at a cellphone, the head is bent forward, the shoulders are rounded, and the back is hunched. The muscles, ligaments, and tendons in the front of the neck are compressed, while those behind the neck are pulled. Also, this position forces the neck to hold up the weight of the head without the full support of the spine. It doesn't take long for such a position to overtax the musculoskeletal system and trigger neck pain. As time passes and cellphone use continues, the entire spine can begin to curve because the muscles are pulling upwards on the vertebral bones, leading to posture problems that in turn cause back pain.

Prevention

neck painTo prevent tech neck, be mindful of how much time you spend hunched over looking at electronic devices. When possible, lift the screen, so it is more even with the eyes. While this might feel awkward at first, it can prevent neck pain before it starts.

Treatment

There are some easy exercises that can help counteract the effects of tech neck. One is an exaggerated nod. Sitting straight in a chair, extend the head back and look up at the ceiling; hold, and loosen the jaw and mouth before trying to extend back a couple of more inches. Move the head back as far as you can comfortably go, hold again, and close the mouth. You should feel a gentle stretch in the neck.

Chin tucks are another simple, low-impact way to introduce mobility into a stiff or sore neck. Look straight ahead, and draw the head and chin straight back, as if you're making a double chin. Now, pull the head up and away from the shoulders and hold for a few deep breaths.

If you're experiencing neck pain, it's always a good idea to visit a chiropractor. A chiropractor can identify the precise cause of the discomfort and develop a treatment plan that provides long-term pain relief. Through spinal adjustments, corrective exercises, nutrition advice, and other treatments, you can eliminate tech neck and use your cellphone without fear of damage or discomfort.
