A piercing is a bold way to assert your individuality and make a memorable impression. Anyone who has a piercing in or around the mouth should take diligent care of the area to avoid some common problems associated with oral piercings. Here are a few of these issues and preventative measures recommended by dentists.

How Piercings Impact Oral Health

1. Infections

Infections are always a concern after piercing of any kind, especially in the days and weeks directly afterward. Bacteria becomes trapped inside the new piercing site, and since the wet, dark environment of the mouth is ideal for bacterial growth, an infection can develop quickly. Symptoms include extreme swelling, itchiness, and liquid discharge. Follow all aftercare instructions from your piercer, and make it a priority to keep the site clean, rinsing often with salt water to kill and prevent bacterial growth.

2. Damage to Teeth, Gums, & Dental Workdentist

When a person gets an oral piercing, there is often a natural tendency to play with or bite down on this new addition to the mouth. But the hard jewelry can chip or break teeth, fillings, crowns, or other restorative work your dentist has performed. It can also wear away tooth enamel and inflame sensitive gums. Dentists advise refraining from playing with the piercing as much as possible; enjoy its look — not how it feels coming in contact with your teeth and gums.

3. Allergic Reactions

Some people have allergic reactions to the metal used in their new piercing. This can look similar to an infection: swelling at the piercing site, itchiness around the piercing, or yellow or green pus oozing from it. If you suspect an allergy to the jewelry, consult a doctor or dentist as soon as possible. You may need to remove the piercing or try another type of jewelry material.
