1. Locate the Hardware

The easiest way to find a cesspool is by walking around the yard to look for an exposed manhole cover or stakes, which are used when the cover is buried. Search for other visible hardware such as electrical boxes or capped pipes as well. 

2. Inspect Your Landscaping

Your landscaping can indicate the location of your cesspool. For instance, trees and shrubbery cannot be planted over a cesspool due to the risk of root growth damaging the pipes. If you see a grassy clearing on your lawn, this could be where your cesspool is hidden. An area of lush greenery may also be a clue since a cesspool leak will fertilize the grass. 

3. Follow Your Sewer or Drain Lines

Beginning from the point where the plumbing pipes leave your home, follow the sewer line, and it should lead you to where the cesspool is located. With the waste disposal pipes buried just beneath the ground, you can use a metal detector. Otherwise, you can tap a rebar on the grass and listen for the sound of metal pipes.
