When properly maintained, your roof can last decades, but repairs may be needed throughout the year. If the damage is severe enough, you should contact a contractor immediately. However, if possible, you should wait for the right time to schedule roof replacement or repair. Every season is different, and offer different conditions and prices you should consider.

The Four Seasons of Roof Replacement

What if I Need a New Roof in Winter or Spring?

Winter is a tough season on roofs. Winds and heavy snow cause more damage in this one season than any of the others. However, winter is also a slow season for contractors, so finding one will be very easy. Due to the lower volume of work, you won’t have to wait as long for the project to begin, and you might be able to negotiate a lower price for their services.

Winter and spring are notoriously cold and wet seasons, making roof replacement dangerous for the contractors, and can affect the materials they need. Shingles require thermal sealants to keep them in place—in colder temperatures, it could take weeks for the shingles to seal, and may not adhere to the roof as strongly as they would in warmer temperatures. Cold can cause shingles to crack, allowing for moisture pockets and algae to grow in the spaces, creating more roofing problems down the line.

Why Should I Replace my Roof in the Summer or Fall?roof replacement

Roof replacement is easier in the summer. The winter’s chill is gone, allowing contractors to work longer days with fewer dangers. Materials like shingles and sealants are more available in the summer, and easier to install. Adhesives are most effective when installed between 70 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit, making summer’s consistent weather the one most contractors prefer.

The downside is that the summer is every contractor’s busiest season. If you don’t schedule an appointment early on, you may have to wait for months.

However, fall is also a great season for roof replacement. The weather is cooler, and less humid, allowing contractors to work longer days than in either winter or summer, but it’s not so cold that it’s damaging to the shingles or adhesives.
