With the warmer temperatures of summer quickly approaching, you’ll use your air conditioner regularly to keep cool and beat the heat. However, ignoring the regular maintenance that’s essential for keeping your HVAC unit in top shape could ultimately lead to unit damage and high energy bills. Knowing what you should and shouldn’t do to take care of your system will keep it working throughout every season.

Do:

Maintain the area around the HVAC system.

When the seasons change, ensure the HVAC unit is clear of overgrown brush, trash, and other debris to prevent damage. If the airflow is restricted, your air conditioner won’t be able to blow cold air and could overheat, potentially damaging internal parts. Have at least a two-foot clearance around the outdoor unit. Inside your house, ensure the vents aren’t blocked or covered so air can flow freely.

Change your air filters.

air conditionerReplacing your air filters regularly reduces home allergens. Change the filters at least once in the spring and once in the fall depending on the quality of the air and the type of filter. For instance, if you have pets, live in a polluted area, or have severe allergies, you’ll need to change your filters twice as often. Additionally, consider investing in HEPA filters, which are made of fine mesh and are more efficient at catching pollutants and allergens.

In addition to improving indoor air quality, this task will help you save money on your power bill. Dirty air filters limit airflow into the unit, forcing the equipment to work harder and use more energy to draw and cool air. Regularly changing the filter prevents this unnecessary wear and tear and helps the unit remain energy-efficient.

Don’t:

Forget to check your carbon monoxide detector.

Carbon monoxide is a dangerous gas that’s colorless and odorless which can build up if your HVAC system is poorly ventilated. Test your carbon monoxide detectors and replace the batteries at least once a year, or as needed. Adding this task to your HVAC maintenance to-do list will grant peace of mind about the safety of your home.

Plastic wrap your outdoor unit.

Some homeowners choose to wrap their outdoor air conditioner in plastic to protect it from summer rainstorms — but this can cause problems down the road. The plastic wrap traps moisture under the plastic, leading to rust. Additionally, covering the unit could encourage rodents to move under the covering, possibly leading to vermin damage. If you want to protect your outdoor unit from moisture, try covering it with plywood to protect it from the elements.
