When tossing trash in the dumpster, double-check that you’re not throwing away anything hazardous or illegal. Many everyday items like cans of paint can be dangerous in a garbage truck or landfill.

What You Shouldn't Throw Out With the Trash

1. Batteries

When batteries deteriorate over time, they can release harmful metals and acid into the soil of a landfill. Instead of tossing them in the dumpster, batteries should be taken to a facility that processes hazardous waste or a recycling center equipped to handle them.

2. Medications

While medicine is beneficial for managing the symptoms of illnesses, it may be harmful to the environment, so it shouldn't go to a landfill. Instead, look for a pharmacy that offers drop-off boxes for safe disposal.

3. Yard Chemicals

Yard chemicals include pesticides and herbicides as well as fertilizer. While it can help your plants to flourish, it’s also toxic to water sources and aquatic ecosystems, and can upset the balance of bacteria and algae.

Dumpsters4. Tires

Tires have steel belts inside that can poke out over time. They’re sharp and sturdy enough to tear the liner of a landfill and cause soil contamination. Instead of being thrown in the dumpster, they should be recycled at your dealership or tire shop.

5. Smoke Detectors

ICSD smoke detectors contain a small amount of radioactive material that allows them to detect harmful gasses. While the quantity is too little to cause harm in your home, it shouldn't be allowed to accumulate in a landfill.
