Because your tires connect your vehicle to the surface of the road, it's essential for the sake of safety and handling to keep them in solid shape. Moreover, the better you treat them, the longer the tires will last. Below are some important car repair and maintenance tasks to help you prolong tire life, save money, and stay safe on the road.

3 Tips to Extend the Life of Your Tires

1. Have Them Rotated

Tire rotation involves moving the tires to different positions on the car. This spreads wear and tear along the entire surface of the tire instead of over just a narrow span. This prevents any deep wear channels and allows the tires to remain safe and useful for as long as possible. For the longest tire life, have them rotated every 5,000 miles.

2. Keep Them Inflated Properly

If you drive on overinflated tires, the excess pressure risks a blowout. To maximize tire life, inflate them to the recommended pounds per square inch (psi) listed in your owner's manual or on the inside of the driver's door (near the latching mechanism). Check tire pressure at every refueling stop, because fluctuations in ambient temperatures can affect tire pressure.

3. Schedule Tire Balancing

Because of miniscule imperfections in the manufacture of tires and rims, each has a heavy spot that can cause it to wobble during rotation. During tire balancing, the mechanic places the wheel on a machine that measures weight distribution. The tool finds the heavy spot, and the car repair technician counterbalances it using weights of 1/4- to 1/2-ounce. This stops the wobbling and prevents uneven tire wear.
