Many children are afraid of going to the dentist. Often, their trepidation stems from a fear of the unknown, or concern over the pain and discomfort that may be lurking in the office. Fortunately, there are a few simple ways to help ease your child's dental phobia. Keep these tips in mind before their next appointment.

How to Help Your Child Overcome Their Dental Fears

1. Encourage Them to Talk About Their Concerns

Few problems in life can't be solved — or at least helped considerably — by talking about them. Encourage your child to discuss their fears openly and honestly with you. Ask them why they’re scared, then, dispel those fears. For instance, if they’re concerned about the pain of getting a filling, assure them they'll receive medicine to numb their mouth, so they won't feel a thing. If they're fearful of sharp instruments, let them know these are just tools the dentist uses and are not dangerous at all.

2. Choose Foods Carefully Before the Appointment

dentistBefore the appointment, give your child a meal with a healthy complex carbohydrate, like a bowl of oatmeal or sugar-free, whole-grain cereal; complex carbs are thought to have a calming effect on the body and brain. Avoid feeding your child anything with caffeine or high amounts sugar, as these can be stimulating and exacerbate anxiety.

3. Teach Them Breathing Exercises

Breathing exercises are an excellent way to distract a child while simultaneously calming them down. The exercises don’t need to be complex. Show them how to take a deep breath in and exhale slowly for five counts. Practice with them before they go to the dentist's chair.

4. Listen to Music

Hearing the new and unusual sounds that come with a dentist visit can provoke anxiety in children. Bring headphones or earbuds along to your child's appointment and have them listen to music throughout their time in the chair. This will both conceal the sounds in the immediate environment and give the child something else to focus on.
