Dental crowns are common solutions for restoring the size, shape, and appearance of a tooth that’s cracked, worn down from decay, or otherwise weakened. Traditionally, this procedure requires multiple appointments to ensure the right shape and fit. However, a dentist who utilizes CEREC® technology can customize and apply crowns in one convenient visit, helping you regain comfort and confidence much faster. Below are answers to some common questions about this revolutionary procedure.

Answers to Common Questions About CEREC® Dentistry

What is it and how does it work?

CEREC® stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics. Using an oral scanner, the dentist takes a digital impression of the tooth that needs repair. A computer software system then makes the impression into a digital restoration and sends it to an in-office milling machine, which creates the crown in less than 15 minutes.

How do CEREC® crowns differ from normal crowns?

CEREC® crowns are made onsite, while normal crowns are made in a lab. They also do not require an uncomfortable physical mold of your mouth; this part of the process is performed with a scanner.

What are the benefits?

dentistThe main perk of CEREC® technology is convenience — one visit, and your new crown is in. Also, the technology allows for a more precise fit than traditional mold impressions. Because they are made of ceramic, CEREC® crowns look and feel like real teeth.

How do you care for your teeth after getting a CEREC® crown?

Continue brushing twice a day and flossing once a day, as usual, after the procedure. Be aware that some sensitivity is normal in the hours and days following CEREC® treatment. Avoid hard, sticky, or crunchy foods for the first few days to ensure the crown has proper time to settle and adhere to the gums. Your dentist may recommend using a sensitivity toothpaste if you have an aversion to hot or cold foods, or fluoride mouthwash if your gums are inflamed.
