By purchasing your own bowling ball, you can customize your experience and have more control over your game. You might even improve your scores in your bowling league. However, choosing one can be tricky. This guide will break down the main elements to consider when picking a ball.

What to Consider When Buying a Bowling Ball

Ball Type

While each bowling ball may seem similar, there are different varieties available. If you are just getting started in a bowling league or are simply playing for fun, get a polyester ball. These products are inexpensive and ideal for throwing a straight shot.

Weight

Generally, a bowling ball should be light enough to comfortably throw it, but also heavy enough to gain force and effectively knock down the pins. Even if you think you know which weight you need, try out a few different weights the next time you bowl to be sure.

Grip

The ball’s grip is another essential element that can make or break your bowling game. If you have been using the options at a typical bowling center, you are likely accustomed to a conventional grip in which you place your middle and ring fingers into the ball, and the grip stops at the second knuckle. You then place your thumb in the back hole. However, you can also choose a fingertip option to provide more lift. To do this, you’ll need to use inserts, which are plugs that you can put in the finger holes.
