If you wear glasses but you’re thinking about getting contact lenses, learn how to choose the right kind. Your optometrist can make a recommendation based on your lifestyle and eye health at your next appointment. In the meantime, here's what to know about the different types of corrective lenses.

3 Kinds of Contact Lenses

1. Rigid Gas Permeable Lenses

Also known as “hard” contacts, rigid gas permeable (RGP) lenses are ideal for those who want a durable option. They’re less likely to tear when putting them in or taking them out, and they last longer than other kinds of contacts. RGP lenses are also more resistant to deposit buildup and therefore can provide clearer vision. Because they are thicker, though, they're less comfortable and require a longer adjustment period.

2. Disposable Soft Contactscontact lenses

Most people find soft contact lenses more comfortable than RGP lenses because they’re thin and flexible. As a result, they're ideal for first-time wearers. The disposable varieties are meant to be worn once and then discarded, so they’re perfect for those vulnerable to allergies or eye infections.

3. Extended Wear Soft Contacts

If you don’t want to worry about changing lenses every morning — or even cleaning them every night — extended wear may be the answer. These soft contacts can be worn for up to a week straight before they must be cleaned and disinfected. You can even wear them while sleeping. If you travel a lot — or simply want to focus on other things — these are a smart option.
