For most homeowners, their heating and air conditioning system is just as much of a summer staple as lemonade and road trips. Of course, all that use can rack up a significant monthly energy bill. If you’re hoping to cut down on utility costs this summer, use the following three no-cost tips to save money.

Summer Efficiency Tips for Your Heating & Air System

1. Close Window Treatments

During the hot summer months, the sun’s rays will pour in through your windows, leaving infrared heat trapped in your home. To prevent this greenhouse effect, close your blinds, shades, and curtains whenever the sun is out. This will prevent your windows from becoming heating lamps and reduce the strain on your heating and air conditioning system.

2. Unblock Vents

Iheating and airf you have a central air conditioning system, your comfort depends on the ductwork and vents that deliver air throughout your home. Make sure no furniture, decor, or clutter is positioned in front of these vents.

If air isn’t allowed to escape from these openings uninhibited, your heating and air conditioning system may sense this and push even harder or cause you to crank the thermostat unnecessarily. Additionally, it’s usually not a good idea to close off vents in less-used rooms, as this also results in overwork for your system as it tries to deliver cool air to a blocked area.

3. Raise the Temperature

If you’ll be out of the house for more than an hour or so, raise your thermostat settings by anywhere from 5 to 8 degrees. You won’t be there to feel uncomfortable in the slight heat, but you can save a substantial amount on your energy bills with this small change, especially over the course of long workdays when no one’s home. This is also superior to turning your system off completely, as the energy it will take for the system to cool your house down from scratch will counteract the energy you saved.
