Whether you’re a recent grad or have been out of school for many years, looking for a new job can be a time-consuming and difficult task. Fortunately, community organizations like an alumni association can reconnect you with former classmates who may know of job opportunities. From alumni events to class reunions, you’ll have plenty of chances to make an impression and get your foot in the door.

How Can Your Alumni Association Help You Find a Job?

1. Networking Opportunities

Alumni events allow you to network with your fellow alums. Whether you’re attending a luncheon or watching a performance, take the time to chat up your former classmates and ask what they’ve been up to. If none of your former friends are in the field you’re looking for, don’t forget to ask them if they keep in touch with others who may have pursued the same industry as you.

2. New Contacts

alumni eventsIn addition to your friends and classmates, you might meet someone new at an alumni event. For example, an alum’s spouse may be attending your class reunion with them. Anyone you speak to throughout your time could put you in contact with someone in your field of work. The best course of action? Talk to as many people as you can, even if they weren’t in your graduating class.

3. Online Communities

Many alumni associations have a presence online. Follow a social media page or join a Facebook group to keep in touch with your classmates and other graduates outside of alumni events. These online communities allow you to connect and network with people who you wouldn’t interact with in person. A fellow alum may even make a post about a job that you’re interested in applying for.
