Through the art of orthodontics, an orthodontists can use braces and appliances to straighten your teeth, correct jaw issues, bite problems, and address cosmetic concerns. Here are a few possible problems with braces and how to prevent them and deal with them.

What Are the Most Common Issues With Braces?

1. Tooth Discomfort

During orthodontic treatment, as the braces are adjusted, your teeth will become sensitive and sore.  Over the counter pain relievers will help with this discomfort.  Prescription pain medication is never prescribed.  As the teeth are gradually moved, arch wires may protrude and poke the inside of the mouth.  Orthodontic wax will help alleviate this irritation until your orthodontist can trim the long wire.

2. Oral Hygiene

bracesOrthodontic appliances provide many areas for food, bacteria and plaque to hide.  Excellent oral hygiene is required and expected during orthodontic treatment.Without proper brushing and flossing, (even without braces) it’s possible for gingivitis to morph into periodontal disease, a condition that can cause tooth loss.

3. Broken Braces

Patient cooperation is pertinent for treatment to be completed in a timely manner.  One aspect of cooperation is avoiding foods and habits that cause damage to the braces or appliances.  Eating hard, sticky and chewy foods can cause braces to break loose from the teeth.  Also, chewing on pens or pencils, water bottles or mouth guards will damage orthodontic appliances.  The more often damage and breakage occurs, the longer the treatment will take to complete.
