Whether you’re new to your congregation or have been there for many years, getting involved in your church is a way to spread the Word of God and help those as Jesus did. Volunteering in any capacity can benefit not only others around you, but also yourself and your family. Below are three reasons to get plugged in and become active in your church’s ministries.

Why Should You Volunteer at Your Church?

1. Meet New People

Even if you’ve been attending the same church since childhood, you may not know the entire congregation personally. Volunteering is the perfect way to meet others in the community who place the same value on family, friends, and Scripture. If you have kids, connecting with other parents could also give your children an opportunity to meet like-minded individuals.

2. Gain a New Perspective

churchVolunteering helps you see the world from a new point of view. When you’re serving, you’ll focus less on yourself and more on the larger issues that you’re passionate about. If, for example, you’re volunteering at a food pantry, you’ll see firsthand how different someone else’s circumstances may be, which can be a humbling—and motivating—experience. The experience may lead you to participate more in community outreach and even get involved in your town’s legislation to enact more change.

3. Make an Impact

Volunteering provides an opportunity to make a difference in others’ lives as well as your own. For example, if you can play an instrument or sing, you can get involved in a church choir. If you’re good with kids, you could help in the nursery or teach a Sunday school class. Something as simple as participating in a city cleanup will improve the community and how others perceive the town.
