You’ve finally found your dream car, and the price is right inside your budget. Unfortunately, that used car may have been involved in an auto accident. Vehicle history reports are a good resource, but they don’t include accidents that haven’t been reported to law enforcement or insurance providers. Before you hand over your hard-earned cash, look for the following four signs that the used car you’re eyeing may have been involved in an accident.

4 Indications of Past Auto Accidents

1. Uneven Panels

Pay attention to panels that don’t seamlessly line up. Gaps near spots such as the front fenders, trunk, and doors are clear signs a used car has undergone body work after an auto accident. Look for spaces in the panels on the vehicle’s exterior. If something looks amiss, it’s probably because of a collision.

2. Mismatched Paint

auto-accidentIf a car’s paint shades don’t match, this may be an indication of a past auto accident. New paint applications over old coatings are likely to show ripples and changes. The luster and finish may also look odd as a result of this. Look at concealed areas on the vehicle as well, including panel edges, trim and on the inside of doors. Drips and paint oversprays could indicate signs of a past auto accident.

3. Missing Screws

Look out for holes where screws, nuts, and bolts used to be. They were likely lost in an accident and never replaced. If these components were replaced, their newness will stand out in contrast to the rest of the vehicle. Be mindful of loose screws as well. If these components don’t fit, it means they were haphazardly placed without regard to the hole’s dimensions.

4. Rust Concealment

Compounds used to cover up rust spots are another clear sign of a past auto accident. Look for attempted concealment around the frame, suspension, and fenders. Even if these rust areas were filled in with compounds and then painted over, ripples and waves in the paint application are dead giveaways.
